Co Labs is a professional development community dedicated to empowering disabled young creatives (ages 16-30) who have undergone treatment for cancer and/or long-term health conditions. By providing artistic, practical, and emotional support, Co Labs fosters community and creative growth while driving meaningful change in aftercare policies for those recovering from life-altering diagnoses and treatment.

Our Collaborators are coached by Grammy nominated and professional musicians through a structured programme of;

1-2-1 music skills, industry and career development sessions

If you’re wondering what the answers to any of these questions are, then join Loz Garratt for a workshop on the basics of harmony, and how to practically put them to use when writing music and structuring songs.

Loz has been a working bass player for over a decade, playing with many artists all over the world. His credits span from Jamie Cullum, Burna Boy and Gary Barlow across to West End shows and recording sessions for Silverback films and Disney.

You’ll learn how to tell stories that reflect who you are, communicate your value clearly, and invite the right people into your world, turning your audience into a genuine, engaged community.

Daisy Morris is a community expert, content strategist and Founder of the content consultancy The Selfhood, and IRL community and content space, Prioject Neighbourhood. She is also a TEDx speaker, lecturer and Author of ‘Community Is Your Currency’ a book which has been dubbed as ‘the social media bible’ by Refinery29. Clients of Daisy range from tech companies such as Adobe, Apple and Instagram, mental health businesses such as Mind and Self Space. Daisy is on a mission to make URL feel as human as IRL and has a community first approach to her work.

“Music production was always a big part of my life, but it was only up until I became a part of CoLabs I realised that something so personal could be expressed, enjoyed and taken seriously. Not only did it feel like my passion was now valuable but it allowed me to dive deeper into who I was a person and avoid feeling the dread of not knowing where my life was headed.

It started when I met both Stac and Zani on the Young Adults and Teenagers Ward in the Royal Marsden and expressed my interest in producing music. Very soon after that they were kind enough to get me a copy of my own digital audio workstation and we scheduled an online session for Zani to show me the basics. We continued these session whilst both Stac and Zani worked behind the scenes to get CoLabs off the ground.

During this time, more young people from the Royal Marsden were hearing about Co Labs and slowly we began to have musical sessions with multiple people. A community was being built.

Eventually, we had other lovely mentors join the community and selflessly give their time to support us in our musical journeys. Jim, Hattie, and Veera to name a few. Whether it was singing, playing an instrument or production, someone was always willing to teach.

One day a lovely opportunity came to us and that was to create our own album to showcase our skills. This common goal of ours led to weeks of regular creative sessions where we would brainstorm ideas together and make music. I was lucky enough to produce a fair amount for this project, collaborating with artists such as Amy and Lauren. It was quite intimidating to produce for such great artists but the support and confidence that came along with being with such a heart warming community made it possible for me to achieve pieces that I will forever be proud of.

Rebecca Dennis delivers the cool, smokey vocal performance that 'Dreams' demands, with a backing that stays true to the original, although perhaps ever so slightly enhanced by Maddy Elleby's natural talent on the drum kit. Co Labs is a professional development project for young creatives of all backgrounds & abilities who have been inspired to continue making music after their experiences with Vocal Beats while being treated at Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital & The Royal Marsden NHS Trust for cancer and/or chronic health conditions. Working with young people 16-25 based in SE England Co Labs offers a music programme focussing on empowerment through Musical Skill Development, Collaboration & Mentorship.
